Frédérique, why is HJ Advocaten so refreshing for you?
“Hey, refreshing!” I expect that reaction from an outsider who meets us for the first time or visits our office. Our office is modern but warmly decorated and is located in the heart of Amsterdam, in a place that is not necessarily typical for a law firm. Something different. Just like a visit to our website: it is informal, accessible and fresh. A nice reflection of our approach and (working) style. In short: refreshing!
And what about resourceful? What does that show?
The team is bursting with creativity and a solution-oriented approach. Creativity emerges in mutual consultation and we find solutions that help our clients. These qualities are also reflected in the improvements we continue to make internally, but also – if we do say so ourselves – brilliant puns during lunch.
Effective. Nice word, what does that mean at HJ Advocaten?
For me, being effective at HJ Advocaten means achieving set goals without losing sight of the required flexibility. It means working together – with our team and our clients – to contribute to the intended result and actually achieve the result. It means making a difference: for the client and also for each other. Making each other better and taking it to a higher level.
How do you express sportsmanship at HJ Advocaten?
Sportsmanship is about being able to deal with wins and losses, with being right and wrong, with compliments and with points for improvement.

Not towards each other, not towards clients and not towards counterparties. We remain human beings and nothing human is foreign to us, but we maintain our stability at all times and do not lose sight of our goals. Sportsmanship at HJ Advocaten also means practicing sports in your free time and exercise on the work floor during ping pong battles or a game of jeu de boules on the Amstel.
How accessible are you? And why?
In the interest of our client, we are always available: early, late or during the weekend. We go very far in that. But we are also available for each other as a team: for fun or if it is necessary. Nothing is too crazy: whether it is work related or personal. Accessibility at HJ therefore also means informality. We find that informality in each other and the client feels this in our down-to-earth attitude, our low threshold and in the interest we show.
