Pakistan’s recorded history dates back to around 1000 CE when Mahmud of Ghazni conquered much of present-day Pakistan from Hindu and Buddhist rulers who were here before Islam came to South Asia. After that various Muslim dynasties ruled over different parts of South Asia for centuries until British colonization began in earnest in 1858 CE under Queen Victoria’s rule. Pakistan gained independence from Britain on August 14th 1947 CE after years of struggle led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah who became its first leader or ‘Quaid-e-Azam’ (Great Leader).
